Fixed regulator provides a steady constant voltage to a circuit. The 7805 IC is such one fixed regulator which provides constant voltage of +5V. It is useful for digital circuits which requires a constant voltage source of +5V. Below is a circuit schematic which uses the 7805 fixed regulator IC. With a input voltage source of greater or equal to 7V the output of the IC will be maintained constant at 5V.

The 7805 IC is very easy to use. The input source is hooked to the input port of the IC and the circuit which is to be fed with 5V is connected to the other end. The third is connected to the ground.

The following shows a picture of real 7805 regulator IC.
