The electromagnetic force on a charge q is given by Lorentz force. Lorentz showed in 1982 that a electromagnetic field acts on a charge q moving with velocity v and the force acted on the charge is give by,

Here, E is the electric field strength and H is the magnetic field strength. μo is the permeability of free space.

The Lorentz force is actually divided into two forces. One force is due to electric field and the other is due to magnetic field.

The electric field force is,

And the magnetic field force is,

One should note that the electric force is on stationary charge or moving charge while the magnetic force is on moving charge.

This relation governs the force on charges by electromagnetic field.
